“What do we do?”

Throughout the year, students from McGill University, Université de Montreal, Concordia and UQAM hold monthly meetings to organize a series of exciting public events showcasing the wonders of the brain. These events are generally held in March, during Global Brain Awareness Week.

  • Classroom Workshops/School Presentations

Every March, university students give an exciting one hour workshop on the brain to students in elementary and high school classrooms in the greater Montreal Area. These presentations are interactive and tailored to their audience.

The elementary school workshop teaches kids about the five senses and how the brain lets us see, hear, touch, taste and smell all the wonderful things surrounding us. It includes several interactive games to teach basic concepts about the brain. The kids also get to see and touch a cow brain if they want.

The high school presentation teaches students how the brain responds to different types of drugs and includes a demonstration with a cow brain.

Generally, schools in the greater Montreal area are contacted by volunteers during the months of November and December to sign up for presentations in their classrooms.

  • Cafe Scientifiques/Neuroscience Cafes

Since March 2009, Brain Awareness Week Montreal has been planning and hosting Cafe Scientifiques in downtown Montreal. These Cafe Scientifiques include a discussion with expert researchers in the field of neuroscience, snacks and entertainment.

  • Open Houses

Every year, during Brain Awareness Week, Neuroscience centers from across Montreal open their doors to students and the public for exciting workshops, lectures and demonstrations on the brain.

  • Brain Bee

Brain Awareness Week Montreal is also involved in recruiting, mentoring and funding high school students to participate in the Annual Montreal Brain Bee contest held at the Neuro in February. Winners of this contest compete at the National Brain Bee and may go on to compete at the international level.
